The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) were established by the Government of India to promote science education and research in the country. They are in a way considered as the science-equivalent of IITs.
There are 7 IISERs in the country in the following cities
- Pune
- Kolkata
- Thiruvananthapuram
- Bhopal
- Mohali
- Berhampur
- Tirupati
These institutes have been declared as Institutes of National Importance by the parliament.
Programmes offered by IISERs
All the 7 institutes offer UG (BS) or Integrated (BS-MS Dual) programmes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
They also offer PG and PhD programmes to graduate students.
Some institutes also offer additional subjects like Geology, Earth Sciences, Humanities etc. For the exact list of subjects offered, please visit the institute’s official website.
Admission Modalities for the UG Programme
Admission for UG programmes in IISERs will be done via a separate entrance exam (IISER Aptitude Test – IAT) is conducted by IISERs.
The application portal is open at the time of writing this article and closes on May 13, 2024.

Should you apply for the IISER UG Programmes?
IISER focusses on pure sciences and if you love science and research-based learning, you will definitely enjoy these programmes.
A lot of students in India are obsessed with engineering and medicine alone and tend to ignore these pure science programmes as a waste of time. It is also a fact that a 4 year BS will not help you get into an IT company, as they prefer engineers.
So, if your aim is to simply get into an IT company and code, you may give these programmes a miss.
However, there are a lot of students who want to go abroad for their PG and who are interested in pure sciences. In the past these students used to apply for an engineering degree, since it was of 4 years and the traditional 3 year bachelors’ degree programmes weren’t sufficient to apply for the MS programmes abroad. These students may consider applying for these 4 year BS programmes.
There cannot be engineering without research in pure sciences. Unfortunately, pure sciences are now lacking the respect they deserve. It is high time students took up pure sciences as a career option.
