Do you dream of getting into an IIM? Are you still in your 12th grade? Guess what! You don’t have to wait until you finish your undergraduate course to get into an IIM!

How to get admission to an IIM?

An MBA/PGDBM from IIM is a dream for many students. The Indian Institutes of Management in India are the best B-schools that teach you various management skills in depth and also offer some of the best placements. A lot of students aspire to get into these prestigious colleges.

At the time of writing this article, there are 20 IIMs in India. However, most students prefer the old IIMs, namely:

  • IIM Ahmedabad
  • IIM Bangalore
  • IIM Calcutta
  • IIM Lucknow
  • IIM Kozhikode

Entry into IIMs is a tough process, which includes a common admission test (CAT) followed by an interview and group discussion.

Among the newer IIMs, IIM Indore is one of the best and this institute has introduced the 5 year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) for students who have completed Class 12.

What is IIM Indore’s Integrated Programme in Management?

IIM Indore’s IPM consists of 2 phases – the first 3 years which are foundation courses and the last 2 which are management courses.

The foundation courses have the following elements.

  • Courses in Mathematics, Statistics and Economics
  • Courses in Psychology, Sociology and Political Science along with courses in Economics to provide an understanding of the core disciplines on which the study of management is based.
  • Courses in Humanities, Literature and Fine Arts provide breadth and perspective.

The last 2 years have the same courses as the ones pursued by the students joining via CAT.

Students who enroll for this programme have an exit option after the 3rd year. Some students may also have an option to take a sabbatical upto 2 years.

You may also apply to the following colleges with your IIM Indore IPM AT score.

  • IIM Ranchi (which also provides a 5 year integrated programme in management)
  • Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad
  • Department of Management Studies, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad
  • Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi
  • T.A Pai Management Institute, Bangalore

Note: IIM Rohtak also conducts a 5 year IPM. However they have their own entrance exam.

FAQs on IIM Indore’s 5-year Integrated Programme in Management

Is IIM Indore’s IPM equivalent to the regular MBA programme?

Yes. At the end of 5 years, students enrolling for the IPM will receive the same MBA degree as the students joining for the 2 year Programme via CAT.

Are the placements for IPM students the same as the students joining via the CAT channel?

Yes. There is no differentiation between the students based on their enrollment channel. IPM students are merged with the CAT channel students in their 4th year. The institute offers excellent placement opportunities to all students.

What is the benefit of the exit option after the 3rd year of IPM at IIM Indore?

1. The programme is split into 2 parts – the first 3 years of foundation courses and last 2 years of management courses. One benefit is that if you wish to do something else after 3 years or feel that your interests lie elsewhere (which is perfectly fine!), you have the option of getting a B.A Degree in Foundations of Management) and exiting the programme.
2. The other benefit is that after your 3rd year, you can consider attempting CAT and getting into the older IIMs (A,B,C) for the MBA Programmes. If not, you can still continue at IIM Indore. A win-win situation for you!

How to apply to IIM Indore after 12th?

The exam will be conducted on July 2, 2022 at multiple cities across India.

The entrance exam consists of quantitative aptitude and verbal ability.

For full details, you may visit the IIM Indore official website.

Interested students may apply on the IIM Indore Application portal.

Should you apply for IIM Indore’s IPM?

A lot of students who study engineering end up doing an MBA immediately after their graduation. Some of them do use their technical skills at work. But a majority of students who are mechanical and electrical engineers end up in banking and finance, where they do not use their skills at all.

When you are just completing your 12th standard, you may not be sure of what you want to do in 3 or 4 years later. Having talked to a lot of students, I have seen many of them who are interested in finance, but take up engineering in BITS or IITs just for the college reputation or because their parents forced them to. Such students should seriously consider the IPM Programme, as they need not waste their time studying subjects like thermodynamics and embedded systems and they get to join a prestigious institute.

If you aspire to get into the older IIMs (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow), the 3rd year exit option of the IPM Programme allows you to pursue those dreams. Good luck in taking a wise decision. 👍
