Should you apply for the Trainee Engineer position at BEL?
To be honest, the salary offered is pretty low. If you are from a top college that offers good placements, the salaries offered by BEL may not match them. The initial pay would have been fine if there was a guarantee of a permanent position after a year with a higher salary, but in this case, it is only a contract position. On top of it, even in the 3rd year, you would only be getting ₹40K per month, whereas many students who get a head start with a placement from college would have crossed the 6 figure mark in 3 years. And there is no guarantee of a permanent position either – you could be let off after you complete the 3 years contract.
However, working in a company like Bharat Electronics Limited is a great learning experience and can prepare you for greater things in future, something that a 10LPA placement in a mass recruiting IT services company may not. Of late, BEL is a lot into manufacturing defence equipment, after COVID has led to the make-in-India drive and reduction on imports in the defence sector. This industry has a huge scope in the future.
You need to choose wisely – whether working in a PSU, a ‘government job’ as many parents aspire for, or a high paying IT job, which can improve your standard of living instantly. Wish PSUs paid competitive salaries to attract the best minds in the country, but that’s a discussion for another day! 😀
